UL 2218 is a rating given to roof coverings (shingles, metal panels, composite shingles, etc) that tests their impact resistance based on the ability to withstand certain weights/diameters/heights steel balls being dropped.
Class 3 a 1.75-inch steel ball (golfball sized) dropped from a set height without cracking. These are the most popular shingles and are typically more budget friendly but have less impact protection than class 4 shingles.
Class 4 a 2-inch steel ball (baseball sized) dropped from a higher height without cracking. The cost is typically higher but is oftentimes offset by insurance discounts or incentives.
Asphalt shingle roofs don’t last forever, and knowing when to replace yours can help prevent costly damage. Most roofs last 15–30 years, depending on the quality of materials and installation.
Common signs it may be time for a replacement include curling or missing shingles, granule loss, leaks or water stains, and visible storm damage. You may also notice sagging areas or moss growth, which can indicate deeper issues.
If your roof is aging or showing multiple signs of wear, a full replacement is often more cost-effective than ongoing repairs. A professional inspection can help determine the condition of your roof and guide you toward the best solution.
